“The one I’ve chosen is Sonny Rollins in Japan. I’m a big Sonny Rollins fan but this particular album was the one that kind of opened the door for me into modern jazz.I was at college as a first year student at Leeds and I knew bit about older styles of jazz because my dad had introduced me to Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster, but I was finding it hard to get my head round more modern styles.So I was sitting in the college library listening to various great jazz players and then I put on this Sonny Rollins album and it was kind of like a window opening and the sun coming in and I just got it then.Some players you find you admire them for the technical ability and you can see what they’re doing and they’re astounding technicians.
